Getachew — if you see this, your family in Ghana is looking for you

Getachew, my beloved friend, left Kumasi in 2004. The distance was supposed to be temporary. It wasn't. The conflict in our region displaced our entire community. Getachew, then 19, left with the blessing of the whole family. Communication was sporadic but hopeful. Getachew described Manchester as overwhelming but full of opportunity. They were working hard, sleeping little, but always asking about everyone back home. Our last contact was 2021. We tried everything — calling mutual friends, reaching out to the diaspora community — but no one had recent news. Getachew was the kind of person who would light up any room they walked into.
