Veronika is my brother. We were separated during the evacuation of Mariupol. In the panic and confusion, we went in different directions. When the humanitarian corridor that collapsed under fire, communications collapsed. Veronika, who was 66, was last known to be near Mariupol. We had arranged to meet at a rendezvous point but they never showed up. I made it to United Kingdom through Moldova. From Leeds, I've been contacting every refugee organization, every volunteer group, every social media page dedicated to finding missing Ukrainians. I would recognize Veronika anywhere. thin and wiry, always moved with quick energy. always wore a silver chain necklace. Before the war, Veronika and I shared a simple but good life in Mariupol.
