Ricardo, my cousin, was separated from us near Houston

My heart has had a hole in it since 2014, when my cousin Ricardo disappeared from our lives. The drought destroyed everything. The fields were dead and so was our hope of staying. Ricardo was 11 years old at the time. We were caught up in a traffic stop that turned into a detention in Houston. I remember the birthday parties where the whole block would show up with Ricardo. A friend saw them around 2023. Since then, complete silence. Ricardo would be around 23 years old now. Last I saw them, they were heavyset, with a booming laugh and gentle eyes.
