My grandfather, Pavlo, and I were separated during the attack on Chernihiv in 2023. The war turned our lives upside down overnight. Pavlo was 58 years old at the time. They refused to leave at first, believing the situation would improve. I made it to United Kingdom through Poland. From Leeds, I've been contacting every refugee organization, every volunteer group, every social media page dedicated to finding missing Ukrainians. Pavlo was small-framed but tough, with sharp features. They had a chipped front tooth that gave a character to the smile. Before the war, Pavlo and I shared a simple but good life in Chernihiv. sitting on the porch watching the sunset, not saying much but feeling everything — those memories keep me going.
