My friend, Zoryana, and I were separated during the attack on Mariupol in 2022. The war turned our lives upside down overnight. When the Russian invasion in February 2022, communications collapsed. Zoryana, who was 12, was last known to be near Mariupol. We had arranged to meet at a rendezvous point but they never showed up. After arriving in Munich, I registered with the government's refugee registration system. So far, no matches. Zoryana was short and stocky, with a round face and kind eyes. They had always wore a watch on the right wrist, never the left. Before the war, Zoryana and I shared a simple but good life in Mariupol. dancing in the kitchen to old records that belonged to our grandparents — those memories keep me going.
