In 2006 near El Paso, I lost the person who meant the world to me — my friend, Pedro.
The drought destroyed everything. The fields were dead and so was our hope of staying. Pedro had just turned 25 when it happened.
Everything fell apart during deportation proceedings in El Paso.
What I miss most is the smell of fresh bread that would fill the kitchen every Saturday.
