My cousin Ngozi emigrated in 2012 — we've been searching ever since

It has been 14 years since my cousin Ngozi disappeared from our lives. I refuse to give up searching. Ethnic tensions in our region made it dangerous to stay. Back then, Ngozi was 34 years old and believed the separation would be short. For the first 10 months, we received occasional calls. Ngozi was working in janitorial work in Washington DC and seemed to be doing okay. They talked about sending money home, about eventually bringing us over. We lost all communication in 2022. After that, silence. No calls, no messages, nothing. I remember sitting on the porch watching the sunset, not saying much but feeling everything with Ngozi. Those are the memories I hold onto. Ngozi would be around 48 today. compact build, thick eyebrows, always well-groomed. Sometimes I hear their voice in my dreams and wake up reaching for the phone.
