My mother Khalil, separated by war in 2020

My mother, Khalil, and I were separated during the conflict in Jalalabad in 2020. I have spent every moment since trying to find them. We walked for days through the desert to reach the border. During the airstrike that leveled our block, Khalil was separated from the rest of us. I remember Khalil as someone who would tell stories to the children to keep them calm during the bombing. I cherish the memory of the way they would hum while doing chores around the house. We lost all communication in 2023. Someone told us they might have made it to Manchester, but we could never confirm it. Khalil would now be approximately 14 years old. I would recognize them anywhere — compact build, thick eyebrows, always well-groomed. The holidays are the hardest — their empty chair at the table speaks volumes.
