In 1987, I was placed for adoption in Quetzaltenango and raised in Houston. I've always known I was adopted, and I've always wondered about my birth family.
From what I've been able to learn, I was in the care of a church-run orphanage in Quetzaltenango before being adopted.
Growing up, I always felt something was missing. Not love — my adoptive family gave me plenty of that. But identity. Where do my eyes come from? My laugh? My stubborn streak? These are questions only my birth family can answer.
I've connected with other adoptees from Guatemala through support groups. Some have found their families. I'm hoping I will too.
