Carolina, my family member, left Barquisimeto in 2013 heading for New York. That was the last chapter I know of their story. The promise of a better life in America was irresistible, even knowing the risks. Carolina had just turned 41. We said our goodbyes at the airport, promising it wouldn't be forever. Communication was steady at first — weekly calls, photos of New York, stories about the new life. Carolina seemed to be adapting well, working in car washes, making friends slowly. The last time we heard anything was 2016. We heard through a mutual acquaintance that Carolina had moved to a different city, but we don't know which one.
