I'm looking for my mother, Luis. In 2019, our family was torn apart near Houston. One moment we were together, the next we were being pulled in different directions. We joined the caravan hoping for safety in numbers. At the time, Luis was just 39. The separation happened because of deportation proceedings in Houston. The thing that haunts me is remembering the way they could fix anything with duct tape and determination. A friend saw them around 2023. Since then, complete silence. Luis would be around 46 years old now. I'd recognize them anywhere — average height, lean build, with curly black hair. There's a hole in our family that only they can fill.
