In 1973, I was placed for adoption in Vladivostok and raised in New York. I've always known I was adopted, and I've always wondered about my birth family. The adoption was arranged through a hospital-based adoption program. My adoptive parents traveled to Vladivostok to bring me home. Growing up, I always felt something was missing. Not love — my adoptive family gave me plenty of that. But identity. Where do my eyes come from? My laugh? My stubborn streak? These are questions only my birth family can answer.
