When the bombs started falling on Kandahar in 2019, my mother Ali and I ran in different directions. That was the last time I saw them. In the chaos of the evacuation, we lost each other in the crowd. Ali was with us until the very last moment before a barrel bomb attack on our street. I remember Ali as someone who always kept the family spirits up. I cherish the memory of staying up late telling stories by flashlight when the power went out. A friend saw them around 2023. We heard a rumor they had been resettled in United Kingdom, but nothing concrete. Ali would now be approximately 21 years old. I would recognize them anywhere — thin and wiry, always moved with quick energy. Every time I see someone who looks like them on the street, my heart stops for a moment.
