Salma — lost during the war in Damascus, 2014

When the bombs started falling on Damascus in 2014, my brother Salma and I ran in different directions. That was the last time I saw them. We walked for days through the desert to reach the border. During the bombing of our neighborhood, Salma was separated from the rest of us. Salma was 5 years old when we last saw each other. They were the heart and soul of our family. A friend saw them around 2014. A fellow refugee mentioned seeing someone matching their description in a camp near Vancouver. Salma would now be approximately 17 years old. I would recognize them anywhere — heavyset, with a booming laugh and gentle eyes. I just need to know they're alive. That would be enough.
